Friday, November 06, 2009 07:12 pm | Working on a '99 1500 speedometer gear box on the front axle. On the parts fiche there is only one gear on HDL's website,(GEAR,SPEEDOMETER 44806-MT2-003 001 $17.86) which I am assuming is the bigger plastic gear. Is the other worm gear not replacable? Does it need replaced? Don't have these parts here, but a friend wants me to order a gear "set". Don't know what exactly to order. Anybody know anything? Thanks!!

Normally the worm gear is okay. Really depends on high mileage whether I would consider anything other than the plastic speedometer gear. Lube it well with white lithium grease. I only replaced the plastic gear and now clean and lube. All works well and that was over 100,000 miles ago. The plastic gear cost little, the whole unit cost a lot more. |
