Installed a Battery Tender on my trike today with the tender hooked up the VOLT gauge shows 14.4 volts is that good or not?

The RED light is still on on the tender it has not switched to green yet?

14.4 is ok, how long it stays red depends on the last charge rate / time, has it been on a charger before?

I appears that the Tender is charging the battery at 14.4 volts. Current is flowing into the battery. When it is fully charged, the current flow will cease and the green light will come on.

What style battery tender do you have?

I have three different battery tender/maintainers and a red light means something different on each one.

On a Battery Tender Jr the red light means charging, That may explain why the volt meter reads 14.4. Do you still have the instructions for the unit?

MY BATTERY TENDER JR'S GO FROM RED(CHARGING) TO GREEN(CHARGED).
MY BATTERY TENDERS(1.5 AMP) GO FROM RED(NEEDS TO BE CHARGED) TO YELLOW(CHARGING) TO GREEN(CHARGED).
MY BIGGER BATTERY TENDERS HAVE GAUGES THAT SHOW LEVELS OF CHARGING.

My battery tender stays red until it`s charged the battery to the 80% level, then the red still is on but the green flashes until full charge is reached then the red goes off and the green is steady.

It will eventually turn to a flashing green meaning it is charging the last 10% then a steady green meaning fully charged. It is very slow, but reads the batteries charge state automatically quite often.

I don't know why you would need to disconnect the negative cable from the bike. I have been using chargers and maintainers on my bikes forever and have never disconnected the cable. But, I can still learn something new if it can be explained.

It is meant to do a slow charge until it reaches a full charge, and then an intermittent charge.

NO NEED TO DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE CABLE.
IF YOU WANT TO DISCONNECT IT, YOU MIGHT AS WELL DISCONNECT BOTH CABLES AND TAKE THE BATTERY IN THE HOUSE.
TENDERS ARE MEANT TO BE LEFT CONNECTED IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN A FULLY CHARGE BATTERY DURING THE BIKES LAY-UP PERIOD.
I HAVE USED THEM TO MAINTAIN MY BATTERIES ON MY TRIKE, SNOWMOBILES, BOAT, CARS, RIDING LAWN MOWER/SNOWBLOWER FOR YEARS.

A tender does indeed charge the battery, no need to disconnect the neg. leads. In fact it comes with a quick connect lead for permanent attachment to the battery on the bike so you can plug the tender to it every time you park the bike in the garage.

It will then monitor the battery with a slight maint. charge and top it off if needed, all automatically.

The only problem is if the battery is 100% dead it will not start to charge it as it cannot tell that it is connected to a battery, instead you get a flashing red LED meaning that it is not connected/bad battery, the battery must have at least a slight charge first for the tender to read before it charges it up.
