I have an '89 GL1500 with a Tow-Pac setup. Never plan on riding this bike as a two wheeler due to physical restraints. I have found that the bank angle switch is an accident ready to happen. In fact, on three occasions with my wife aboard as co-rider we almost had serious accidents after hitting bumps (ie. railroad tracks). Would like to disable the switch permanently. Has anyone done this and how do you do it. Thanks for your input.

Do you know if the Safety Recall was complied with? You can still have it done if not.

It may be easier to replace it since it shouldn't do that at all.

That was a recall on 1988-1993 GL1500's.

John there are three wires on wire going to the bank angle sensor take the two outside wires and put them together on the bike side of the plug which is under the seat located on the right side. Now guys he just wanted to know how to do it.We do this all the time on Trikes.

Gary, just curious, why would that be done on trikes?

Is it the chance of extra vibration?

Could it be because of the gravitational forces pulling to the side when a trike goes around a corner, verses a motorcycles still pulling straight downwards because it is leaned over?

The bank angle sensor WILL be the first thing disabled when I get a 1500.

No damned reason for a motorcycle to have an "automatic" switch ANYWHERE that will shut it down w/o the rider's input!

Trikes don't lean so there's no reason to have an automatic switch to shut you down.

What was the reasoning behind putting that on in the first place?

I can just see the damned thing shutting down in a tight leaning corner. There you are, in a curve, the engine goes dead, your rear wheel locks since it is attached to a dead engine, and you are the next thing dead!

Makes absolutely NO sense!

In a tight leaning curve the gravity is still pulling straight down on a bike, the switch kills the engine should the bike ever happen to be upside down on top of you.

Gary, thanks for the heads up. I'll tear it down this weekend and make the modification. In fact, thanks to all for your comments.

Gary H. Bank Angle Sensor saved my and co-rider one day!! Stopped to corner of a country road intending to make a right turn. Did not notice that the road at the corner had a drop off. When put leg down.. was NO pavement. Gold Wing rolled over and pinned wife and I under bike. It is my opinion that the Bank Angle Sensor was a BIG part of us NOT being burned!!! If that item works just one time it is well worth keeping it a BIG safety part of the bike. BUT each to their own ideas of safety.......... Ride safe and free...

The BAS is designed to shut off the engine when the bike falls over or crashes. On the 1800 it also shuts off the fuel pump. If it is working correctly it will not activate until beyond where the crash bars are in contact with the pavement.

On my 1200 the engine is still running when she is on the crash bars, but the couple of times she has tipped any further the engine has been dead.
I have had a couple of older bikes that were screaming away when someone tried to run up and pick the bike up only to have the rear wheel grip and the bike tear away out of control to do more damage.

When my bike goes over, the carbs starve for fuel. I guess a fuel injected engine would keep running, so there MAY be a tad bit of basis for the argument.

But unless there is a MAJOR fuel leak (which there won't be on a simple go-over) and open spark (unlikely, since plug wires are VERY sealed now), the threat of fire on an upset bike is virtually nil.

But the chance of the thing failing at a crucial time is too much to risk having it, IMHO.

On most trike the Bank angle sensor is disabled just because of this problem..
