I am traveling from OK to NJ now and back on Tuesday. On the way into NJ my instrument lights, some gauges (fuel, temp) and all the rear brake and marker lights went out. I checked the 15 amp fuse and it was fine, I swapped it out anyway and it did not fix the problem. Then after I got to where I was going to meet a friend to follow him home I turned the bike off to wait for him. While waiting I turned the key to both the acc and on position with absolutely nothing coming on. I turned the key on and off a few times until a few lights came on, including the headlight and then I started the bike to one see if it would come on and two be able to ride it the short trip to my friends. It did start but still had the previous issue with the instrument panel and all the rear lights.

Could it possible be a relay? I do not have my Shop manual with me. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably a relay. You can use your air compressor relay to see if your lights come back on. I think this will work but it's been a while since I looked at a 1500. The cover over the relay box is tough to get off and you might have to loosen the left saddle bag to get to the relays. hopefully someone else can add some more information.

#3 relay, top row right. A pilot PLR1 relay available at any auto parts store that sells Pilot lighting will have them for about $7.

Or you can temporarily switch with the compressor relay or another matching relay that you don't have to have to get you home.

What Bob said: #3 relay. Replace it with a PLR1 Pilot 30amp relay from auto parts house.

another vote for the #3 relay, I had the same thing happen on my 98 1500.

I removed the saddle bag to get to that relay but I have seen comments here about another way. try removing the screws for the relay box and pulling the box out enough to get to the relay.

I havn't tried this myself but it wouldn't hurt to try and alot less work.

Well, it looks like we have a winner with relay #3. My only question now is how often does this happen? Luckily I had a spare relay with me of the correct voltage/amperage. So, if it happens again on this trip I still have a spare from the compressor position.

Garnet, to aid in eliminating that problem, you should get a Pilot Relay as suggested above. It is a 30 amp relay and is less likely to fail like the 20 amp stock relay and it cost a lot less than the omiron Honda relay. Relays do not work like a fuse. The 30 amp means it will carry more load without over heating and burning out.

Garnet I believe from a prior post it might be related to the number of NON LED lights you have on the bike. Before LED`s I added a lot to what was stock on the rear of the bike, side markers, middle fill ect, it seemed to have helped a lot when I went to the 30 A. Pilot relay. I have this feeling my problem on my other post is going to be lose relay for whatever reason.

After hitting a curb and doing the "Evil Kenevil" with my 1990 GL1500, I am in the midst of chasing the same family of squires,No running lites/ head lite, no dash indicators or ignition/ starter. Found #8 fuse blown #3 relay OK but found a ground on the down line ckt contact of the socket. So far T/S is pointing to a possible ignition switch... Had no idea that these symptoms were such a common problem. The postings are a help, but I've moved WAAAAY past the bad relay part. Thanks a load,
