Following the most recent oil thread I went and cheated :-) by looking in the owners manual to confirm my thoughts.

1991 Aspencade by the book 8,000 miles oil and filter using the recommended oil grade back in 1991.

1999 Ford Ranger 5,000 miles oil and filter.

2004 Honda CRV 10,000 MILES OIL AND FILTER.

All the manuals have a second interval for severe use, I have never managed that criteria.

I do the bike at 8K or once a year, the truck at 5K and the CRV at 5 K.

So according to the book I`m using twice the amount of oil I need to for the CRV, if I go by my dealers wishes I`d be wasting way more than that. The oil I use now even if it`s Dino IS FAR BETTER than oils of years past giving even more protection than the OEM specs call for let alone using a pure synthetic.
I wonder how much just here stateside would be saved if just the OEM change interval were followed, maybe it would turn out like the gasoline prices when so many cut back and or changed driving habits.
So do as we wish but as one fellow says when he wants to know why something is the way it is, just follow the money trail, we would all probably be surprised. Al

While it may be true that we could save a lot of oil simply by following the correct change intervals I would be concerned about the unforeseen unintended consequences of actually having everyone do so...

Oil change places would be driven to bankruptcy...

Oil re-sellers would loose sales volume

Oil distributors would be forced to lay off workers as the demand shrinks

Refineries would be stagnated...

Shipping companys would haul less cargo...

All would contribute to the general financial malaise we find ourselves in today with the current economy.

Save some oil...? Sure. But at what cost?

Asking the guy down at the local quickie lube if you need an oil change is like asking a barber if you need a haircut!

Carl, And what is the downside to saving all that oil? Your approach is sort of like saving the jobs of "buggy whip" manufacturers. There are lots of wasteful practices that are done for no practicial reason.

I'm not happy that Albert actually used the handbook to get information. He should be guessing and shooting in the dark like the rest of us.

3K oil changes with today's oil, and today's gasoline quality, is an atrocious insult to the dinosaurs which sacrificed themselves to make the oil. Really now, these wings run almost stress free, oil and gasoline are certainly superior also, and we keep following the book like sheep thinking it's gospel. I'll wager that anyone who's changed oil at reasonable mileages like say 8K, against the 3K people, will still have a bike just as long lasting and just as performing, as the 3k guys. It's a waste to toss good oil, ESPECIALLY the synthetic. That oil can easily do 10 if not 15K with filter chances in-between. I chose to split the difference and change dino at 5K, and I'll try and do syn @ 8K when I switch. Try is the operative word. jm2c Martin

Guys, you really make me feel guilty. I was really upset that I didn't change the oil in my wing before I went to GPR this year, so I made sure that it got changed when I got home. 4000 miles on that change. I had never let it go that far before...Sorry

When you compare the looks, smell, and feel of new oil to 3000 mile oil, the difference is so obvious that I don't mind changing oil and filter at 3,000 miles. Besides, it makes my bike run so much better. I suppose if I was a high mileage rider, I wouldn't change at such a short interval.

To each there own. 3000 mile oil changes are a thing of the past. There will always be those that kling to the old school, like those who still think carbs are the way to go. Me I'll go with the evolution of equipment, and oils. I think maybe a hydrogen powered goldwing.

I have my oil changed at 3k. In the patrol car that is. Since I'm not paying for it, and all he idle time, I don't see a problem. I do the bike at 5k, the Subaru at 5k, the Camaro at about 3k, and the Mazda PU when ever the mood strikes, which amounts to about once a year (4-500 miles).

Rotella T synthetic oil looks better and feels slicker at 8,000 miles than the old dino oils do at only 1,000 miles, indeed the dino oil just turns black and loses all viscosity, feeling like black water, by 2,000 miles.
